conservation & research

Surgeons’ Hall collections are Recognised of National Significance by the Scottish Government and the Pathology Museum is one of the oldest and most complete of its kind in the world. It is one of the few that is open to the general public.

research

Research on the collections takes many forms and crosses many disciplines: including clinical, surgery, biology, anatomy, and pathology; nursing, osteopathy, forensic archaeology, arts practice, anatomical drawing, sculpture, history of medicine, social and economic history, cultural history and theory, study of chemical and material science, literary history, creative writing… With new scientific techniques for body imaging and analysis of human tissue married greater access to collections through digitisation and collections databases, the relevance of the collections to researchers grows greater every year.
